Saffron is a species of crocus that flowers purple in autumn. The species is mainly used as a spice plant. The stigmas of its flowers, the "pistils", are used to make the spice, which is also called saffron. Each flower contains a pistil that branches into three stigmas. Only these sweet-smelling pistils are used as a spice when dried. It takes about 150,000 to 200,000 flowers to produce one kilogram of them.
Saffron has a life-affirming energy and spreads good humour. It promotes clairvoyance and has an aphrodisiac effect.
