A Book of Shadows is the personal workbook, 

diary and religious-magical collection of texts 

of a Wicca practitioner.

The classic, historical counterpart is the grimoire 

(a medieval book of spells), 

which contained rigid instructions for summoning spirits.

Use in modern witchcraft

In reality, the book has no magical powers, 

but serves as a personal reference work. Its use divides into two main areas:

In the coven (witches’ circle) – the core framework:

A traditional circle possesses a central Book of Shadows.

Transmission:

New members (initiates) traditionally copy the ritual texts, 

laws and core ceremonies of this coven book by hand.

As a solitary witch (loner, free-flying)

The magical diary:

Those who practise alone use the book as a journal. 

It records which rituals were performed, which herbal mixtures worked and which spiritual experiences were made.

There is no fixed structure, as each book grows individually.
