Valerian is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows to a height of 1 to 2 metres. It forms rhizomes as survival organs. The hollow stem is ribbed and mostly glabrous and is found in large parts of Europe. Valerian root is one of the best-known herbal sedatives. Among other things, it is said to be effective against restlessness and anxiety, insomnia, nervous heart complaints and cramp-like complaints in the gastrointestinal area. In magic, valerian is mainly smoked to exorcise spirits.
