Mistletoe (Viscum album)
Mistletoe is a plant species in the sandalwood family (Santalaceae) and is one of the few parasitic vascular plant species in Europe that parasitises directly on the shoot axes of host plants.
It was sacred to the ancient Germanic peoples because, living between heaven and earth and green even in winter, it symbolised the continuity of life and fertility. The custom of exchanging kisses under the mistletoe at Christmas and at the turn of the year has remained from this belief. Druids (and who doesn't know Miraculix in the world-famous comic series Asterix?!?) cut them at the turn of the year with golden sickles in top-secret places and brewed all kinds of healing and magic potions from them.
