"The helmet of fear / terror" is a magical symbol of protection.
It is one of the best-known magical symbols of Iceland (galdrastafir). The galdrastafir were symbols to which a number of powers were attributed.
The aegishjalmur was used to protect warriors and instil fear in their enemies. Its name is made up of two parts: "ægis-", meaning terror/fear, and "-hjálmr", meaning helmet or covering.
